Much like Fortniteand other live-service battle royales, Call of Duty has gotten new content of all shapes and sizes for years.

The transition to making Call of Duty: Warzone the heart of the franchise was anything but smooth, but it does seem like a step towards the ideal scenario for fans going forward. Players who are just interested in Modern Warfare multiplayer now have to download the massive battle royale in order to gain access, continuing a trend of storage space problems that have plagued recent releases in the franchise. The game can also be installed separately from Warzone on those devices, something that is now not true on PC. This is seemingly a PC-exclusive problem for now, as Modern Warfare continues to have its own store page on consoles. Modern Warfare purchasers are still able to play their game, but it's almost as though it's become a add-on of sorts to Warzone rather than the other way around. It's unusual that a free-to-play game would completely overtake something that players paid money for, but there's thankfully no actual change to what's available in-game. As spotted by PC Gamer, anyone who loads up Activision Blizzard's PC gaming destination will now see that Warzone has completely replaced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare under the " Partner Games" tab, even for those who have purchased and own the full version of the mainline game.

So, in that way, it does make sense that Warzone would be the game that Activision wants to promote on the launcher.

While Activision and its various developers have restarted support for games after this point in the past, it's only in the case of a new game's extreme lack of success, and Black Ops Cold War appears so far to be far from disappointing sales-wise. However, it is a game firmly rooted in the past (despite its modern setting), so updates for 2019's entry have ceased in favor of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was a huge success in its own right, and many dedicated fans prefer its style of shooting to the latest '80s-inspired entry.
